Tsugawa In The Community

March 14, 2009
Staff member John Ellerton volunteered with the organization Friends of Trees to plant 140 street and yard trees around West Vancouver. About 140 volunteers pitched in and planted trees despite the rain. NW Natural Gas furnished the volunteers with lunch.

March 18, 2009
John Ellerton was invited and spoke to the Minnehaha Garden Club on the subject of Water Gardens.

March 19, 2009
Tsugawa Nursery invited the Ridgefield Garden Club to use our meeting room for their monthly garden meeting. Following their meeting Brian Tsugawa spoke to the members about new plants and products in the nursery and spent some time answering garden questions.

WE’RE GOING GREEN

Have you noticed that some of our containers have someone else’s label on them or that the box we put you plants in use to hold oranges, coffee drinks, soup or Avon products.  We here at Tsugawa’s are doing our best to “Go Green.”

SOME WAYS WE ARE TRYING TO ACHIEVE THIS:

  1. Replacing the standard bulb with compact fluorescent ones.
  2. Recycling our drink bottles.
  3. Having local stores hold cardboard boxes for us to use as plant carriers.
  4. Re-using those plastic grocery sacks.
  5. When we receive goods in cardboard boxes or packing material, we either re-use or recycle them.
  6. We receive many of our availability lists via the internet, thus cutting down on the amount of faxes we receive, which means we cut down on paper use.
  7. The paper we use is either recycled or re-used.
  8. All of our plant debris is composted.  Some days we fill 5 to 6 bins.

SOME WAYS YOU CAN GO GREEN:

  1. Feed the birds – not only does feeding the birds bring a bit of nature to the yard, but birds help rid your yard of many kinds of bugs, thus negating the need for toxic pesticides.
  2. Plant a garden – by putting in a garden or adding a flower bed, not only do you add some beauty to your landscape, you are helping the environment by reducing soil erosion.  When you plant trees, shrubs and flowers, you are helping to reduce some kinds of air pollution.
  3. Bring your used pots back to Tsugawa’s and put them in the bin in our parking lot.  If you need a used container take one or more.  Many customers stop by and pick up a few to start their plants in the spring.
