The lilac bush (Syringa vulgaris) is a favorite of many Northwest gardeners. Known for their intense fragrance and beautiful blooms, lilac flowers range in color from purple to pink, with white and yellow varieties also available. When planted as a hedge, they make a great source of privacy. Lilacs come in dwarf varieties that can grow up to 8 feet tall or larger varieties that can reach up to 30 feet. These lovely plants can last decades in your garden with proper care.

Lilacs require only minimal care, with the exception of regular pruning. They can thrive in a range of soil types but prefer humus-rich, well-drained soil. Water them thoroughly, but not too often. A fertilizing in the spring will give your blooms a boost, but beyond that, they should grow happily through the year. Come see us if you have questions about this beautiful and popular plant.
